Essential Guide to Keep Background Apps Running on Motorola Devices

Motorola smartphones run a clean, near-stock Android UI. However, recent models feature strict built-in battery and performance optimization tools that aggressively restrict background app activity. This can prevent real-time alerts or cause background tracking apps to shut down unexpectedly.

To ensure your essential apps stay active, configure the following 4 key settings sequentially:

1. Set App Battery Usage to 'Unrestricted' (Most Critical)

This is the most important step to prevent the system from automatically killing your app when it is not actively being viewed on the screen.

• How to set: Go to Settings → Apps → See all apps, then select the specific app you want to configure.
• Action required: Tap App battery usage and select Unrestricted.
• 💡 On some models, you may need to toggle on Allow background usage first, then tap on the phrase itself to reveal the "Unrestricted" option.

2. Add to 'Background APP Management' Exceptions

Recent Motorola devices (such as the Moto G or Edge series) feature a native optimization layer that manages active memory. You must exempt your vital apps from this feature.

• How to set: Navigate to Settings → System → Performance.
• Action required: Tap Background APP management (or Background auto-start restrictions), find your app in the list, and toggle the switch ON to add it as an exception.

3. Disable 'Adaptive Battery'

This stock Android feature dynamically monitors your habits and puts apps you haven't opened in a while into a deep standby mode, preventing background syncs.

• How to set: Go to Settings → Battery.
• Action required: Look for Adaptive Battery (or Adaptive preferences) and toggle the feature OFF.

4. Lock the App in Recent Apps Screen

Secures your application in the volatile system RAM so it doesn't get cleared when you accidentally hit "Clear all" in your open tasks.

• How to set: Open the app, then swipe up from the bottom of your screen to trigger the Recent Apps overview screen.
• Action required: Press and hold (or tap) the app icon located at the top center of the app's preview card, and select Lock from the contextual pop-up menu.
